Financial Research
Research in Finance can mean one of two things. It can mean
the research that ordinary people do or it can be the research academics
do. Academic research is much more rigorous but much less timely
and not profit motivated. However, it is necessary for a better
understanding of finance.
Academic research sites
While there are many very good journals, two stand above the rest:
- The Journal of
Finance (JF)
- Journal of Financial Economics
(JFE)
.
- FEN
(A part of the Social Science Research Network) Great site for downloading
academic articles and working papers. A must see for any professor
or grad student! Too bad the search often fails to work. But
still a GREAT resource!
- Research-Finance.com
may be the motherload! Wow! A real home run!
- Journal of Financial
Research
.
- Review of Financial Studies
-
- Financial Analysts
Journal
-Put out by AIMR
- Journal of Financial Markets
-Good for microstructure but a weak site.
- Journal of Financial
and Quantitative Analysis
- Journal of Financial Planning
- Journal of Financial
Intermediation
-
Journal of Financial Regualtion and Compliance
-
Journal of International Money and Finance
-
Journal of Multinational Financial Management
-
Journal of Policy Analysis Management
- Journal of
Political Economy
- Journal of Property
Management
-
Journal of Psychology and Financial Market
- BQuest
--Great idea! Forget the paper journal, an e-journal! Faster turn-arounds
:)
Other sites that often come in handy when doing reseach:
- McKinsey Quarterly
-while not academic and not strictly speaking finance, it is very good!
Excellent on many topics including Finance.
-
Ohio State
has compiled a great group of links to most every Finance Journal there
is as well as many working paper series.
-
FinanceProfessor.com
has a growing list of academic papers that are summarized. Authors
who wish to submit their work are encouraged to do so.
- The University of Chicago (which houses CRSP) obviously has a top
notch research reputaion. They list some
working papers
online as well as links explaining
CRSP
including its history and a newsletter.
- Other schools also host their own working papers. Some of
the ones I frequently check are from
UCLA
, Univeristy of Texas, Simon School at the University of Rochester, as
well as Ohio
State
, Harvard, and the
London School of Business
- A few individual superstars warrant their own sites:
Jay Ritter
(if you are looking for IPO info, look here!)
Ivo Welch
-his site has everything, even a picture of his plane! It also has a great
directory
of who is where in finance.
- If you are looking for earnings announcements the
Company Boardroom
is the place to go!
Sites with Historical data
Yahoo
maintains the easiest site for historical stock prices
CRSP
of course has the most widely acknowledged site. This is what most
academic research uses. The best!
GlobalFind Data
has stock prices going WAY back but you have to pay for it.
US Treasury's site
has current and historical rates on T
-Bill and T-bond.
Investorhome.com
has many sources of historical data
Investment oriented sites
Finance.yahoo.com
is Yahoo's site for stock quotes. The really cool thing about it
is that you can download past stock data as well. Overall the site
is very well done. It is also useful for
industry specific
research.
Bloomberg's
Market Report. It has quotes on international markets, foreign exchange
markets, as well as commodity markets.
CNNfn
has some interesting business stories and importantly keeps its stories
"active" for longer than most sites.
Vanguard
has an excellent site for both investment news and a "university" for
learning more about mutual funds. Highly recommended.
Others:
Wall Street Research Net
- Has everything, including the ability to download 10 years of stock
price data.
