Finance Jobs --Getting a job is not always easy.  Espeically if you are new to the field and have little experience.  That is one reason why I encourage my students to get an internship!  Even if there is no academic credit, an internship is a great idea!  Also take advantage of any ties you have to jobs: friends, alumni, etc.

    FinanceProfessor Job Search tips

    1. Be confident!  Looking for a job can be very stressful time.  It always seems like the world is against you.  It really is not.  Be confident!  You will get a job.  It just takes some patience.
    2. Network.  As much as we hate to admit it, we all know that some jobs are never advertised and that sometimes it really is "who" you know.  So make it a point to get out and network with others in your field.  It might just give you the inside track on your dream job.
    3. Do your homework.  Research the industry, the company, and even who you will be interviewing with.
    4. Be proactive.  Mail resumes to who you want to work for even if they are not currently hiring.  History is replete with the person getting the job because of persistence.
    5. Make sure you have the necessary skills.  Read job-postings.  Look for what employers want.  Then get what they want.  Even if it means waiting a while before you apply.
    6. Work on your resume.  Make it attractive and easy to read.  Reviewers often only have seconds to get the high points. Make the most of those few seconds.
    7. Post your resume online.  This is a quickly progressing trend.  Many past students report getting jobs from online job postings.  Make sure you are active in this field.  However, remember the goal is to get a job not a bunch of time consuming interviews, so try to tailor your resume to those jobs that you really want.
    8. Stick to it.  Do not give up.  It will often be difficult and no fun.  Just stick with it and remain confident.  Truly believe you are the best person for the job and that the employer needs you.  If you do not get hired, it is their loss.
    9. Remember it is your responsibility, not your teacher, not your FinanceProfessor, and not the school's career services department.
    10. Be confident  I know it has been listed before but it is very important!!!!

    General Online Job Sites

Monster.com -- Hey they advertised on the super bowl! But seriously it is a great name and great site.  Special finance section and links to Robert Half's survey.

ERI (Economic Research Institute) has a good site and provide valuable salary data for some finance positions!

JobsOnline- Much information and a pretty cool newsletter.  Even has prewritten cover letters.

HRUniverse.com -great links to job posting sites and much career information.  Much career information.  Some Finance information.  Slow loading.

Careers-in-Business.com --has many subtopics including careers-in-finance.  I really do not know

St. Bonaventure Career Services -includes a list of companies interviewing at SBU.

    Finance Oriented Online Job Sites

Bloomberg.com --top rated by my past students.  Seems to be especially strong in the DC area.

Fincareer.com -great job posting web site, including anonymous postings, and a news finance news section that is EXCELLENT!

Financial Jobs.com --good question and answer forum, interesting articles.

InvestmentPositions.com -Fairly new site that specializes in Investment Banking and Law.  Has a pretty good compensation survey.

RobertHalf.com - an oddity in this field.  It has been around since 1948!  Well known for its compensation surveys, it is an executive search firm, but according to past students it often has good entry level jobs as well.

Kforce.com --relatively new site but has a cool video on what skills employers in Finance and accounting require. Claims to have placed over 240,000 people.

Vault.com - Pretty good job board, but excels on the information it provides on companies and also has a page for internships.  I liked it!

Financejobs.com --Also known as Accounting jobs.com.  Lists jobs for both professions.

I also urge you to check out Ohio State's Careers in Finance page .

I would especially like to thank Jim Mauk, Brad House, and several other past students for their help in coming up with this list.

If you have other links that you feel should be added, please let me know.
