*  Who says office hours have to be during the day? Suppose your students do
their work at night and have questions then. Of course they can email
you, but why not try online office hours using one of the many instant
messengers that are available for free. They are easy and give you real
    time communication with your students.

I use Yahoo messenger (jimmahar) and also AOL (FinanceProfessor). Try it,
your students already do and you will be surprised how easy it is.

*   In the first week of class assign each student a class (or multiple classes depending on class
size). Then have that student be responsible for coming up with ten questions from the class.
Grade the questions (to create an incentive) and then share the questions (through a web site
or email) with the other students in the class. This will give the students questions to study from
and will give you more questions from which to make tests and for very little extra work!

Everyone likes to be more than a number. Even in big classes always try to learn the students
names. This can be done in many ways. I find that having the students use name placards on
their desks/table is effective. However it need not be the only way: When handing back
homeworks or tests, use the time as a learning experience whereby you learn the names of your
students. An added benefit of knowing names, is better attendance!

*  A while ago I mentioned that on the first day of class is always ask my students to submit
a brief bio of likes/dislikes, hometown, contact information and the like. I then give them the
same information. I have heard from several of you that you do something similar. I thought
it was interesting the vast differences in how you keep the information. The most ambitious
of you enter it into a database but other ways include keeping index cards, and of keeping
folders on each current student. (wow, that must take some time). I love to look back at the
bios as the class progresses and once I have sort of gotten to know the students. Very fun
    and interesting.

Why not use FinanceProfessor.com news for your own class? It is free and comes out
weekly. Your students will appreciate you holding down the cost of their education!
